MAIGES - Mathematical Analysis of Interacting Gene Expression Systems -
is a collaboration with Dr. Luiz Fernando Lima Reis, CEPID - ANTONIO
PRUDENTE CANCER RESEARCH CENTER.
Its main applied goal is to develop a mathematical and
computational environment suitable to fully exploit new biochemical
technologies, like cDNA and CGH microarrays, in cancer research. The
size and highly non-trivial structure of data generated with these
technologies, which comprises not only expression data but also the
associated clinical anotations, poses several new challenges. The
environment must enable efficient, robust and reproducible statistical
analysis and the use of several computer-intensive machine learning
methods, with corresponding statistical significance estimates.
These goals, of course, can only be attained from a close collaboration between mathematics and biology.
Project MAIGES is the applied arm of a more theoretically
oriented interdisciplinary project to develop an integrated class of
mathematical models for biochemical regulation networks. On the
mathematical side, our main contribution is the proposal of a new
dynamical systems approach to model those networks. The dynamical model
arises as the thermodynamic limit of a non-reversible statistical
mechanics model.
